I came across an online article in which the author suggested that a sign always be posted next to a wedding centerpiece constructed of favors. The author stated that guests are likely to be confused and not know that they are supposed to take one of the goodies home.
Take a look at the gorgeous tablescape below. Would you not know that you are welcome to one of the darling packages on display? Do you really need a sign to tell you that you are? I think it's a nice touch to include a sign, but don't think it's absolutely necessary. (Don't be misled by what appears to be a sign on this table; it's actually a menu :-)
